Troubleshooting Your Internet

Check the power and connections

If there are no reported outages, see if a few quick checks uncover the problem:

  • Make sure the plugs for the devices haven’t come loose, the outlets are working, and a fuse hasn’t blown.
  • Confirm that your account is up to date on payments. Late payments can cause an interruption of service.

Restart your modem

  1. Unplug your router from the power by pulling the power cord from the back of the router.
  2. If you have a router, unplug the power from your router by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the router.
  3. Plug the power back into your modem and wait 30 seconds.
  4. If you have a router, plug the power back into your router and wait 30 seconds.
  5. Check your Internet connection by opening a new web browser window.
  6. If you still have no Internet connectivity, restart your computer or the device experiencing an issue and repeat steps 2-5.

Factors Affecting Internet Speeds

There are many variables, often outside of Suddenlink’s control, that can affect your Internet speeds:

  • Congestion – Large amounts of usage across the Internet can cause congestion, also known as heavy usage. If the links to various networks and servers outside of the Suddenlink network are being heavily used, then you may see slow speeds across the Internet. Additionally, when there is a lot of traffic on the Suddenlink network, you may see temporary periods where you have slow down. This often happen during peak activity hours.
  • Website/Server Limitations – On some websites the amount of traffic and the server supporting it may reduce your speed of connection. For instance, when a larger number of users are connected the available speed might be divided amongst the users. So if you are one of one hundred people connecting, each person would only get 1MB of the 100MB available.
  • Web Browser – A corrupted or poorly configured web browser is one of the most common bottlenecks for fast web browsing.
  • Adware or Spyware – If your computer is infected with “adware” or “spyware” you’ll see reduced computer performance and a constant stream of pop-up ads. This will likely cause everything on your computer to work slower. To minimize your risk of being infected, download Panda Antivirusavailable at no additional cost Suddenlink Internet customers.
  • Wired vs. WiFi – Wireless connections may be slower than wired connections into a router or modem. Wireless connections may also be subject to greater fluctuations, interference and congestion.
  • Modem – Modem performance may degrade over time, and certain modems are not capable of handling higher speeds. For speeds exceeding 20Mbps, Suddenlink recommends the use of DOCSIS 3.0 modems.
  • Computer Hardware – The speed of the processor, hard drive, network card, graphics accelerator, even the amount of RAM, all impact the speed your computer can process Internet data.
  • Operating System – With extensive use, any computer operating system can become corrupted, inefficient or configured incorrectly, which will affect the speed.

Restarting Your Router

Restarting your router will often resolve connectivity issues.

  1. Find your router. It will be connected to the  cable from the wall.
  2. Unplug your router from the power by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the router.
  3. Unplug your router from the power by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the router.
  4. Plug the power back into your router and wait 30 seconds.
  5. Plug the power back into your router and wait 30 seconds.
  6. Check your Internet connection by opening a new web browser window.
  7. If you still have no Internet connectivity, restart your computer or the device experiencing an issue and repeat steps 2-6.
